Call for Papers is out for yet another Open Source Days in Copenhagen/Denmark. The event is organized by Open Source community in Denmark.

So please read the Call for Speakers below and forward it to friends, colleagues, fellow Perl mongers and anybody who could be interested.

I am evaluating if any of my talks given to the Copenhagen Perl Mongers through the last year would make could candidates for Open Source Days 2012.

jonasbn, Copenhagen

—

Open Source Days 2012: Call for Speakers
========================================

Open Source Days 2012 is currently planned for early March 2012 and we are
looking for gifted, entertaining and technically enlightened speakers for the
conference.

The conference itself will take place the 2nd and 3rd of March and training
will be available 1st of March.

Training courses – Half or full day
———————————–

As something new we will want to try out longer training courses – half or full
day, held on the day before the conference itself.

We are looking for both subjects and instructors.

Since we expect the course participants to pay for the training, we are willing
to pay the instructor for giving the course, provided that a sufficient number
of people sign up.

Naturally the course instructors also get free access to the conference, since
we also hope to get a normal talk out of the instructor.

Normal Talks – 45 minutes
————————-

This year we will have a track with focus on the use of open source software in
newly created startups and another track with focus on green technologies.

Non-startup related talks are also of interest and we’ll try to fit them into
various related tracks.

Speakers can attend the conference free of charge and to some extent we might
be able to reimburse your travel and hotel.

Lightning Talks – 15 minutes
—————————-

Talk about anything you like. Tell us about your idea for a new project, how
you made your first Qt application or something completely different. For
lightning talks, only your imagination and the timeframe are the limiting
factors.

If you have never tried doing a presentation before, but are working on
something you believe other people might find interesting, then this is a good
opportunity to start.

Lightning talk speakers can attend the conference free of charge.

Sponsorships
————

Sponsorships can be in the range of DKK 10000 and up. Please write to
sponsor2012@opensourcedays.org if you are interested in becoming a conference
sponsor.

Your sponsorship could, for example, be used for:

* Provide a conference T-shirt.
* Provide lunch for the participants.
* Provide key hangers.
* Provide a conference bag.
* Provide a conference beer event.

Exhibition Booth
———————————

More information about these will follow once we get closer to the conference.

Contact Information
——————-

Please, send us a title, a short description and a short biography of yourself
to program2012@opensourcedays.org no later than January 21st, 2012.

Again this year the Open Source community in Denmark are planning a super event.

This year the event will be held at the venue where the Copenhagen Perl Mongers held YAPC::Europe 2008.

As for last year we are hoping to attract some Perl people and Perl talks. Last year we arranged a two-day Perl 6 Hackathon in conjunction with the OSD conference, but this year we aim a little wider.

So please read the Call for Speakers below and forward it to friends, colleagues and fellow Perl mongers.

jonasbn

Call for Speakers
=================

Open Source Days 2011 – Community Edition – will be held on Saturday March 5th
2011, at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Frederiksberg and we are looking for
gifted, entertaining and technically enlightened speakers for the conference.

Normal Talks – 45 minutes
————————-

Open Source Software has been around the block for quite a while. Every day we
all work with rock-solid software that just works. This year we are interested
in the status of those “goldies” we all take for granted – as well as the new
upcoming savvy projects.

You might be a developer, a community leader, a businessman or a user group
participant seeing the bigger picture or just know your software inside-out -
share your knowledge with us, by giving a talk. Speakers can attend the
conference for free and to some extent we might be able to reimburse your
travel and hotel.

Lightning Talks – 15 minutes
—————————-

Speak your mind – tell us about your idea for a new open source project, how
you made your first android app or something completely different – the only
limit is the time frame – 15 minutes!

If you haven’t tried giving a talk before – this is a good place to start.
Lightning speakers attend the conference for free, but we do not reimburse your
travel expenses.

Tutorials, Workshops and Demos
——————————

If you are just dying to give us a demo of how you hacked your newest gadget,
you want to host an Arduino workshop or you know postfix forwards and backwards
and want to give a tutorial – let us know. Workshops, demos and tutorials have
a time frame set in accordance with the speaker.

Tutorial and workshop speakers will be reimbursed as normal speakers.

Community Booths – Join the Fun
——————————-

Our wish is that the community groups will start planning for their activities
and events for their booths immediately. Open Source Days 2011 – The Community
Edition will deliver the infrastructure and by doing so give the user groups
the best possibly platform for strong community content at the conference.

This year we would like the user groups to submit a description of their
planned activities at their booth as well as a short description on themselves.
Having a descriptive program for activities will greatly help us pick the most
interesting user groups for the conference audience.

Please send your request for a community booth to
ug2011 at opensourcedays.org

together with a description of your planned events no later than February 1st
2011.

Sponsorships
————

We are looking for sponsorships. A sponsorship can be used for a special
purpose like:

* Provide a conference t-shirt
* Provide lunch for the participants
* Provide conference keyhangers
* Provide a room for talks or User Groups
* Provide a conference bag
* Provide a conference beer-event

Or maybe just a way to show you and your company’s appreciation for open source
software.

Sponsorships can be anywhere in the range DKK 1,000 to DKK 25,000. Please
write to
sponsor2011 at opensourcedays.org
if you want more information on the
sponsorship opportunities at the conference.

If you are interested in an exhibition booth, you can also contact us, on the
above mail-address.

Get in Touch
————

Please send us a title, a couple of lines about your talk and a short bio to

program2011 at opensourcedays.org
no later than February 1st 2011.

You are also most welcome to write to us if you have any questions regarding
the conference. You can also catch us in the IRC channel #opensourcedays @
EFnet.

If you represent a company, we expect you to state so in your mail.

Feel free to follow us on Twitter:

The Copenhagen Perl 6 Hackathon and the Open Source Days conference is over.

I am left filled with magnificent impressions and at the same time suffering from a mild case of information overload.

Due to a collision with the Dutch Perl Workshop the Copenhagen Perl 6 Hackathon was scheduled to start Saturday and continue Sunday, where the Open Source Days conference started friday. In addition we had arranged for the invited Perl 6 people to have some time on their own to discuss and hack face to face, something that have shown beneficial previously for other dispersed project groups.

We started the Saturday with a line of Perl 6 presentations – there was a good turn up to the talks, also by people who I have not seen at Copenhagen Perl Mongers meetings.

I have received little, but very positive feedback on the event. One of the more interesting pieces of feedback was this tweet (http://twitter.com/Jippi/status/10071258756), which really pin-pointed that we are doing the right thing and having fun at the same time.

Perl 6 is different and I think that it is important to emphasize the difference, not just different from Perl 5, but different in many aspects and from other languages. I can only say that I think that Perl 6 will be a very modern language and as Perl 5 programmer I will need to rethink the ways I am writing Perl.

I overheard a discussion over some Perl 6 construct and one of the comments was that it was not a very Perl 6-ish way of doing things – Perl 5 is not Perl 6. Personally I am very keen on getting to use Perl 6, but I have slowly started to understand that it will be significant change. Perl 6 will address many short-comings in Perl 5 naturally, the primary language designer is the same person, but in general Perl 6 is a new language and it will address short-comings in many languages. Yes it will also have it’s own, but then we then we just address that in Perl 7 – implemented in Perl 6 magnificent isn’t it…

My experience with this kind of events is that it takes some time before the actual result show. I hope that we will be able to attract some new people to the Copenhagen Perl Mongers – and I hope that the Perl 6 community have benefitted from the opportunity to present Perl 6 at a large open source non-perl conference.

The aftermath of the hackathon is hopefully going to be more positive than the aftermath of the Open Source Days conference. One of the exhibitors made a small happening at the conference involving body painted girls. The IT business in Denmark has for a long time been working hard on attracting women to a business, that is always short on clever people of both genders. Based on the blog entries and comments I have seen the conclusion must be that the happening was a bad idea – a really bad idea and I can only concur.

Implementation wise I hope we have been able to contribute over the weekend and that we have earned the Copenhagen release – I am working on my first larger Perl 6 application and it is fun. I am constantly refactoring the code to be more Perl 6 and training my brain to start using Perl 6 patterns.

Thanks to all the invited Perl 6 people, attendees and the coord of Open Source Days for giving us the opportunity to show of Perl 6.

For about a year we have for using this small Data::FormValidator constraint extension we developed for use with telco a client.

It has finally been released to the CPAN.

The distribution by now contains 3 modules, representing 3 different approaches to validation of Danish phone numbers.

- Business::DK::Phonenumber, is a basic procedural implementation, exporting a validation subroutine.
- Data::FormValidator::Constraints::Business::DK::Phonenumber, is a package to integrate with the marvellous module Data::FormValidator
- Class::Business::DK::Phonenumber, is a object oriented implementation providing a class for handling phonenumber object

In addition to the 3 approaches listed above. The distribution offers:

- Generation of dummy phone numbers, which can be used for testing
- Pretty printing of phone numbers, so phone numbers, can be output and formatted using simple templates

This is the initial public release and it covers pretty much what we expect and set out too solve, ideas for improvements are more than welcome.

Business::DK::Phonenumber is the second open source project from logicLAB, which is developed on our Atlassian Jira Studio solution, so things might change overtime as we get more into using Jira Studio for both closed and open source projects, for now the following resources are available from our Business::DK::Phonenumber project web site (http://logicLAB.jira.com/browse/BDKPHN):

- Wiki
- SCM, Subversion, readonly
- Bug/Issue tracking, requires account for now, but we are working on that

Business::DK::Phonenumber is distributed under the Artistic License and can be downloaded from your local CPAN mirror or via: search.cpan.org.

For my long term clients Itzy-Bitzy Communications and LOGU I have developed and maintained a set of tools for working with their DanDomain web shop solution. The DanDomain web shop offers a set of partner programmes, in the shape of product exports aimed at different external sites and services like:

- EDBpriser
- Gate2Prices
- Tradedoubler
- Kelkoo
- Partner-ads.com
- Pricerunner
- Din Pris
- Forbrugerliv.dk
- Spar30.dk

The tool implemented in Perl takes the existing exports and does manipulation and filtering on them for finer control and application of certain business rules to improve and optimize the output.

The tools have grown over the years and in the spring of 2009 a lot of new feeds were added to the existing suite of tools. This indicated a long awaited refactoring of the code base, which had grown organically with the requirements from Itzy-Bitzy Communications and LOGU.

One of the things that came out of that refactoring was WWW::DanDomain a class based on Andy Lesters marvelous WWW::Mechanize a Perl module, assisting the developer in creating an HTTP client for accessing and retrieving data via HTTP.

WWW::DanDomain is for now pretty slim, but it is the core foundation in the tools created for accessing DanDomain web based administrative interface.

The idea behind the class, it to sub-class it and overwrite the processor method, which is the place to hook in, in order to get access to the product export data.

Currently we have implementations doing the following:

- Converting to XML from CSV
- Merging of data from two different exports
- Conversion from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8
- Complex business rules changed single fields in export
- Creation of exports for service providers not supported by DanDomain (see the list above)
- Cleaning of exported data

WWW::DanDomain is the first open source project from logicLAB, which is developed on our Atlassian Jira Studio solution, so things might change overtime as we get more into using Jira Studio for both closed and open source projects, for now the following resources are available from our WWW::DanDomain project web site (http://logicLAB.jira.com/browse/DAND):

- Wiki
- SCM, Subversion, readonly
- Bug/Issue tracking, requires account for now, but we are working on that

WWW::DanDomain is distributed under the Artistic License and can be downloaded from your local CPAN mirror or via: search.cpan.org.
